Are Deportations Increasing Under The Trump Administration?

From the start of his election campaign up to today, President Donald Trump has been very vocal about his stance on immigration policies. Now, six months into his presidency, it is a good time to look at the actual numbers and what they mean for immigrants.

57,069 Deportation Orders In Six Months

In the first six months of the Trump presidency, 57,069 immigrants were ordered to exit the country by federal immigration courts. According to an article from the Washington Post, this is a nearly 31 percent increase compared to the same time period last year.

However, a deportation order does not always lead to a deportation. Immigrants are entitled to their day in court. More than a third of the immigrants threatened with deportation won their case in court or had their case closed so they could remain in the U.S. Unfortunately, the total number of wins has dropped since last year.

The Washington Post article also points out some troubling issues. For example, immigration courts are incredibly backlogged, which can lead to delays and other problems. Perhaps worst of all, the article mentions that many immigrants threatened with deportation do not take advantage of their day in court, either because the did not know about the court date or were unable to secure legal representation

Immigrants threatened with deportation need to know that this can be fought. As the numbers show, success is possible.
